And y'all say us folk down here can't count!
While comparing conferences yesterday evening with a co-worker... sure enough 11 teams in the big 10? WTF? It's from when PennState joined in 1990, and they just said screw it we're leaving it be. ![]() can you see the hidden 11? I can, it's all I see now, on either side of the T.... Damn Yankee's... |

Thats why it has an "11" in the Big 10 logo. I guess that was an easier change then the big 11 or something

They put Ohio State in charge of counting the teams. Give them credit, they are only off by one. On a more serious note, Penn State was admitted long after the Big 10 was founded and it probably was too much trouble to change the name.

It's all about preserving the brand. It doesn't actually matter ** sarcasm** how many teams there are in the conference THE BIG TEN is a well established trademark. It's all about dollars not logic. The other thing is if they decide to try to get a school to jump over from another conference or bring in Notre Dame so they can have a conference championship game THE BIG TWELVE is already taken.

The Big 10 has actually had a varying number of schools in its history. It was actually founded with 7 schools in 1896. Original schools were University of Chicago, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue and Wisconsin. In 1899, Iowa and Indiana joined. Ohio State joined in 1912, finally giving it 10 schools. In 1946, University of Chicago left the conference after being unable to stay competitive athletically . They were replaced with Michigan State in 1949. Penn State joined in 1990, maxing it a 11 team conference, the Big Televen, as some like to call it. The Big 10 is the oldest Div. I athletic conference.

Hey dan'l,
Bring me up to speed here, if you don't mind...what's your story bro? I've seen you say you don't know much about American football, which is obvious being as your an Auburn fan, you didn't know the Big 10 is the Big Televen, and you appear to follow soccer, Liverpool in particular, very closely. My deduction skills tell me you ain't from around here, are ya? I'm gonna have you converted before its over with and you just don't know it yet. ![]() |
