March 19th 1920 The United States Senate voted down signing the Treaty of Versailles for the second time. 1931 Nevada state legislature legalized gambling. 1945 Kamikaze planes attacked the U.S. carrier Franklin off Japan, killing about 800 people. 1953 The Academy Awards were first televised. 1954 Joey Giardello knocks out Willie Tory in round seven at Madison Square Garden in the first televised prize boxing fight shown in color. 1954 Willie Mosconi sets the world record by running 526 consecutive balls without a miss during a straight pool exhibition at East High Billiard Club in Springfield, OH. The record still stands as of today. 1962 Bob Dylan's self-titled debut album was released. 1982 Guitar legend Randy Rhoads died in a plane accident while on tour with Ozzy, he was 25. 1985 "Spin Magazine" began publishing. 1995 After giving up an attempt to become a major league baseball player, Michael Jodan returned to pro basketball with his former team, the Chicago Bulls. 1997 Artist Willem de Kooning died at age 92. 2003 Operation Iraqi Freedom is launched with air strikes on Baghdad, the beginning of the war with Iraq (March 20 in Iraq). 2003 Mahmoud Abbas became prime minister of Palestine. He would later succeed Yasir Arafat as head of the PLO and president of the Palestinian Authority. 2008 Science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke died at age 90.
