Default Capacity - How to Determine....

Typically, a rule of thumb for figuring out count.... is 100 cigars for every (overall) 700 cubic inches.... (or there 'bouts). So, for example, a 10x10x7 humidor is 700 cubic inches - so, 100 count

However.... if you take it a step further..... and look at the available space inside the humidor.... take away trays, tray supports, crumb catcher & dividers and let's say you have a space of 15.5" x 8.5" x 4" available to lay your cigars.... which comes out to be 527 cubic inches....

Now.... finally, I get to use the high school formula of Pi R Squared..... in order to determine the volume of a cigar.

Cigar ring gauge is measured in 64ths of an inch... so, the radius of a RG 42 would be 21/64ths.... which converts to .328125

So, with the formula to determine the volume would be (Pi * .328125 squared * the length of the cigar) and using a
5-1/2 x 42 corona as an example, you wind up with a cigar volume of 1.860335 cubic inches for each cigar.

So... take the 527 cubic inches and divide it by the 1.860335 and you wind up with a mathematical "count" of 283 and some change.... so, technically speaking, that humidor is a 283.2823 count humidor.....

But, as we all know... real estate gets consumed and picture perfect packaging in the cigar world does not really exist... so, there must be a standard somewhere.... ergo, 100 cigars for every 700 cubic inches (overall dimensions)....

I have drawn out to show how the cigar capacity is determined on three of my typical sizes. Small (15" x 9" x 5.5") - 100 Count, Medium (17.5" x 10.5" x 6") - 150 Count, and Large (19.5" x 12" x 8") - 250 Count.

As you can see, the addition of trays, dividers, crumb catchers, various cigar sizes and basically anything that takes up volume will have an effect on capacity.

I drew out the capacity on three of my "standard" models to help illustrate....

Capacity display for a 15" x 9" x 5.5" - 100 count - Small (Waxing Crescent, Cygnus, Andromeda, Eclipse & Full Moon Series) with 5-1/2" x 42RG Corona Cigars

Capacity display for a 17.5" x 10.5" x 6" - 150 count - Medium (Waxing Crescent, Cygnus, Andromeda, Eclipse & Full Moon Series) with 5-1/2" x 42RG Corona Cigars

Capacity display for a 19.5" x 12" x 8" - 250 count - Large (Waxing Crescent, Cygnus, Andromeda, Eclipse & Full Moon Series) with 5-1/2" x 42RG Corona Cigars
