We currently have 2. An iPad and an iPad 2. Neither has 3G.
I did have my phone jailbroken for a while and tethered it to my iPhone, but we rarely ever needed it.
The kids use them more than anyone, although I do use it quite a bit.
I rip a bunch of the kids DVDs using Handbrake and put those on the iPads.
It worked great for our flight last year to Puerto Rico.
If you have a young one, I would recommend the Otterbox case. Our iPad 2 was dropped by my 2 year old on day 2. I was fortunate that Apple replaced it for free. Both now have Otterbox cases.
