This threw me when I first read the thread, but I figured, "Maybe I'm smoking them wrong?" I do get a nice spice, but definitely don't find them to be peppery.

That said, I wondered about these alternates when I saw them last week at the JR in Selma. Didn't wonder enough to buy them, but I did wonder.
