What I do is put a wireless Hygrometer in each of my humis/coolerdors and check the RH/Temp every day. I only open when I need to dig some sticks out or add more. I do love that smell of well stocked humi with a perfect temp/humi.

NOt to be the "stick in the mud" but.... if it's winter and you have the heat on or even if you don't the air is VERY dry so just take that into consideration. Conversly in the summer you probably could leave it wide open and it would be fine, although I don't recommend it.
