My First Marathon
The big day is almost here. On Sunday I tackle my first marathon in Washington, D.C. The Marine Corps Marathon is going to take my marathon virginity.
Anyone else into distance running? I'm by no means a running freak, but I figured I should do one before I get too old and busy. College seemed like the perfect time. Some ROTC friends and I decided to give it a go. Last minute advice? What stogie to light up once I recover from the fetal position on Monday? |

Re: My First Marathon
I've completed 5 1/2 marathons and one Reach The Beach relay race. I haven't ran in a while but I think I'll be ramping up for this years Boston.
Just make sure you are tapering and relaxing this week along with extra carbs. Believe in your training and don't start out too fast. Believe me when I say that you'll want to with all the excitement. It's a marathon...not a race...this is your first so keep in mind finishing is a great accomplishment. Best of luck to you buddy. Let us know how you feel after! Oh and after accomplishing such a feat I would suggest a 1980's Davidoff! Bao

Re: My First Marathon
Good luck
I just finished my first marathon on Oct. 5th. It was a great experience. 6 months ago I couldn't run 2 miles. Trust your training and find your pace. I recommend getting a great night sleep two days before your race, it's more important than the night before. Have fun |

I wish you well!
I am an old fat man... only way I'm doing a marathon is if they make a 13 mile buffet line (I would hit both sides for the full 26 miles. ) |

Re: My First Marathon
Best wishes. I have never ran a marathon but I have done a handful of 10 and 15 kms. I also did a half marathon a few years back but everytime I try to be set to do a full marathon it falls through, someday I hope to. When your out there and it feels like your body is done just stay focused on keep moving. I am sure it will be awesome. Try to post a pic for before/afterwards.

Re: My First Marathon
My doctor doesn't like me even thinking about running a 5K so my dreams of a marathon or Ironman have been dashed for the time being. I admire your dedication!
Good luck and in honor of 26.2 how about a Padron 1926? |

Re: My First Marathon
Well, just got back today. My goal was: (1) to finish (2) to run under 4 hours. I achieved both with a 3:42. I am very proud of that, but at the same time I felt great. I think I could have run sub 3:30 pretty easily. I just didn't know how to navigate the mass of people and got stuck behind a lot of slower runners. I couldn't get around them so I got stuck running 10 minute miles for the first 4 miles. I then picked it up to 8 minute miles and hit my stride. Not to shabby for a first marathon.
What an experience though. For anyone out there that is on the fence about doing a marathon, do it. A big chunk of humanity turns out to watch and cheer, and the camraderie and festival atmosphere is a lot of fun. Seeing all the OIF/OEF veterans out there running for friends of theirs killed in action as well as the multiple amputees is a very sobering sight. It is something that I'm going to have to do again next year. Besides, they started the race with an Osprey flyover. I hadn't gotten to see the new Osprey yet, and they look very cool. I haven't gotten a chance to light one up yet, but I definitely will tonight. Now, I'm off to sleep and recover. My joints are killing me. |
