I usually roll the ash off. Makes me feel like a gentlemanly scholar!

But really - it is just how I learned to ash a cigar.

Brutal and I know the feeling. I often find myself biting my tongue with my wifes family even though I just want to verbally blast them most of the time. The last time was a couple weekends ago when my freeloading brother in-law was over and saw my overflowing cabinet and humis and his comment was, "Sure looks like a lot of cancer to me." I literally wanted to just say "F-U, you Mary." Keep in mind this is the same guy when we would have a party or BBQ where drinking was taking place always asked if I had anything fruity. He finally stopped asking and got the hint when the last time he asked me that question I embarrassed him and said "Nothing but my fruity brother in-law." My wife even chuckled but I did eat a lot of sh*t for not keeping that comment to myself later that night when he went home and whined and cried to his wife who in turn gave my wife a load of crap. He's the guy who has no problem dishing it out but never being able to take it. OK, back on topic. Your situation triggered a little pent up frustration that needed to be released.

This question has never come up. Given that of the guys I normally smoke with, only one has what I would consider a sound knowledge of cigars (and that sure isn't me!)...and the fact that our favourite ashtray is a damaged Dana35 diff cover sitting on the middle of a 1/4" thick steel work bench, ashing technique has never really bin a topic of discussion

But...we smoke what we like, and we like what we smoke

Gotta love the "know it all"!!

I give one lite tap with my finger. If it doesnt release, it wasnt time. Let it ride for a little while longer.
I dont ash just to get rid of it, I ash when it gets long and is ready to plop.

It all depends on where and when I am smoking.
Outside, hanging? Don't care.
Laying in bed drinking late at night? I keep it rolled off. Burned my self too many times.

everyone knows the only proper way to ash a cigar is to hand it to the girl who walks into the B&M and have her jump up and down until the ash falls off

Talking Re: To tap or roll??? That is the question

I do it both ways too and as others said this guy sounds like a nutjob. Not to say there's anything wrong with a nut, but I'd rather live without them...I've heard that you should let the ash remain on the stick as long as possible as it produces a cooler smoke. Whatever works best with your style.

Cheers

I roll my off but thats only because I read it was correct when I first started smoking.
I haven't really noticed anybody else do it though. I read you should never tap you ash but who really cares, cigars are all about your personal experience and what you enjoy!
I prefer not to ash at all but sometimes it is innapropriate

You were the only one to comment on that.

Yeah I pretty much threw anything he said out the window when he mentioned Thompson.

I say send him a fruity sampler from Thompson's with his credit card information. Fruity cigars and catalogs

I tap usually and sometimes roll. Depends if I'm indoors our outdoors.
