Default Moving stuff to a new computer

Is there any way to move actual programs from my old XP computer to a new Windows 7 computer? I understand that files, favs, pix etc are easy enough, but finding mostly negative comments about programs. TIA.

You can't just move executables. The software should be re-installed.

(Before any of my fellow techies jump on this, I know it CAN be done but mucking around in the registry is not advisable.)

Thanks- that was what I was afraid of. Now it's just a matter of tracking down those programs I want to keep!

Yeah unfortunately that's the way it is. Even if you were able to grab all the correct files, they likely wouldn't run on Win7 anyway due to compatibility issues.

You need the installer files or "source code" to reinstall an application.

I know this doesn't help you, and I'm not usually an apple fanboy (I like both systems), but this is where I found mac to be WAY easier. Just drag the application icon to an external hd, then drag it to the new computer and for most programs that's all you need to do. Super easy and it just works. (sorry, had to say that to annoy the rabid anti-apple people).

Migration Assistant works great too for Mac to Mac migrations!

Even where I had the original software, I ran into compatiblity issues. Going from older programs to new, 64 bit OS, many of my programs would not install. Good luck.

Best to GHOST he image to the new machine...update the drivers as nessacary....and then update to Win 7.

But that may not work for all the effort.

It's really best to go with a clean install of Win 7 on the new machine and re-install the old apps...and move the data files.

Yupper- I think that I'll hafta re-install a bunch of those programs with all their keys and codes. But, might as well do it right the first time!

Trust me. You'll be happier in the long run.
