In your opinion, is it the drink doing the influencing or that the cigar in fact has those flavors?

El Mejor Emerald is a favorite of mine, and they definitely have cedar flavor. Pairing with a Sprite seems to accentuate that flavor. With water it's much more of a background thing, the Sprite makes it "pop."

I love rootbeer with a mild cigar. In that combination there would no overlapping of taste.

Yep, that's what I find. I usually drink Barq's but I like most rootbeers. Pretty much rootbeer and peach Snapple are all I have with cigars. I've been fasting sodas the past couple weeks and cigars definitely aren't as good with just water.

Oh, and for flavors it brings out caramel and vanilla notes, sweetness, and just enhances the whole cigar.

I don't smoke mild stuff though so maybe it overpowers the smoke?

Hmm. I can't do Dr. Pepper with any cigar. Just don't like the combo. To each his/her own!

Not all combos will go together well in my experience. I like a spicey cigar with my RB. That's a good combo.

Root beer, Dr. Pepper, and Coke are my usual complements
with a cigar. Even OJ is good, but may be overpowering.

A cigar bar in the nearby city introduced me to Napolean Brandy
with my cigars, and Cognac and Calvados also sound good. But
I don't often drink liquer. Maybe this year I'll get a bottle of brandy
or cognac to sip with my smokes. Might be a nice change of pace.
Those bottles aren't cheap, though!

It brings out many of the flavors that are in the rootbeer, if they are already present in the cigar, at least for me. A good, natural, hand-crafted rootbeer is pretty complex and has a lot of distinct ingredients. Vanilla, cream, anise, molasses, nuttiness, sarsaparilla, ginger... Depends on the cigar for me. If you think about some of the cigar tastings offered in B&Ms, they will pair the cigar with things to enhance the flavor of the stick in question. Usually they will offer some sort of complimentary liquer or candy. For example, when the La Aroma de Cuba mi Amor was released, Mission Pipe Shop paired it with dark chocolate and dry coconut. Do these things bring out the flavor or enhance it? One must decide for themselves. Personally, I think these things compliment the flavor. So does a good rootbeer.

Smoking a Goviado Blue Lancero right now with a Mug diet root beer. So far I like it. It gives the cigar an extra "creamy" note and helps to bring out the citrus notes I'm getting from the cigar.

I'm a fan of root beer with my cigars. I prefer Capt'n Eli's root beer when I can find it. Boylans root beer and creamy red birch beer are also favorites of mine.

I always try to avoid soda and other sweet drinks with cigars. I just don't think they pair well. Almost like it over works your mouth making it harder for me to taste the cigar.
