Here's an article on the last American veteran of the "Great War", better known as World War I. Remarkably he's also a Bataan survivor.

While it's not mentioned in this article, he was also a longtime cigar smoker. I recall it being cited elsewhere, long ago.

Wow!

In third grade, I was required to go to a nursing home and interviews someone there about history. I interviewed two guys.

First, there was the gentleman who was born in 1862 (he was 108 at the time of my interview), who's father came back with only one leg after Gettysburg.

Second, there was a gentleman who had boxed against Max Schmeling.

I visited frequently with both of them for the next few months, just sitting, talking, playing sheepshead, and marveling in the history they shared.
