R.I.P. Alex Karras
Detroit Lions All-Pro linebacker and subsequent movie star passed yesterday. His Mongo character in Blazing Saddles will live on with me, as will some of his devastating hits on the Bears back in the 60's.

Re: R.I.P. Alex Karras
Alex came along the same time I was getting into football. One of the "enemy" that you had a hard time hating because they played the game the way it was meant to be played. (Think Butkus, Ditka, Nitschke, etc)
RIP Alex.

Lost a good one. RIP Alex.

Re: R.I.P. Alex Karras
I don't really remember him playing football, I don't even remember watching Webster, but Alex Karras was
one of the fraternity of football player-actors that swept through Hollywood in the 70s. Did a lot of episodic TV. Lots of commercials. Good player, too, I imagine. Most of the famous ones were. |

I had the chance to meet him about 11 years ago at a private party in Kansas City. He was very nice and funny. I enjoyed watching him on tv playing football and acting. R.I.P. Mongo!

Karras also played the Sheriff (and the Brother of the title character) in Porky's.
He also was under consideration for the part of Carlo Rizzi, the brother-in-law of the Corleone family, in The Godfather. Good job not casting him, hard to imagine James Caan giving him that street beating.
