Thermite!~
So, I was watching Burn Notice and i saw them do this to a car full of "bad guys" (they put a can of thermite in the hood and it melted through the hood, block, oilpan, etc)
And i wanted to test the validity of what they did on screen. Check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WrCWLpRc1yM and a few more cool Thermite vids. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oiRJj2oRWnM Thermite and turkey http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SU8iRYbnAb0 another cool experiment! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNQ36...eature=related 2 powders form a liquid and ultimately a solid, the reaction is crazy. enjoy

I've used it in small (operative word being SMALL) shots to weld rail together for overhead cranes. Much like the rails the trains run on but wee need solid joints.... very scary stuff....

Very neat. I've done something similar with grounding. Copper wire is placed in a mold with a piece of rebar. A 'cupcake' is inserted in the top of the mold and ignited. A copper slug in the 'cupcake' melts and fuses the copper wire to the rebar. |

Not sure what end of the spectrum you're on in regards to this process, but if you have any references I'd love to learn about it.

Re: Thermite!~
I made that once back in high school. I was in charge of taking inventory of the chemistry supply closet... a few things may not have made the final list.
It's a bit tricky to light, we used a strip of magnesium. Once lit, the small pile of dust turned into a 6 ft flame. We lit it in a sand bath, the fire was hot enough to melt the sand, and there were little balls of iron mixed in from the reaction byproducts. Definitely a fun experiment! |
