Default Aksum (formerly Metapa) corona gorda

5.5" x 48, box pressed

This line used to be called Metapa and was re-branded for some reason, since the blend and sizes are (supposedly) the same. I had smoked a couple of Metapas and liked them quite a bit, so when I saw these on Cigar Page for a ridiculously low price ($10/stick vs $13), I grabbed a box.

First few draws...STRONG woodsy and spice flavor. The spice flavor is so strong that this cigar almost seems like it's flavored. It's a really unique flavor, so good that it made me nod my head and say, "Damn."

About 1" in...the 'strength' has subsided a bit, but the flavors are still the same. Wood and spice. The spice flavor is quite unique; it's not the typical 'Nicaraguan spice' that I get from AJ Fernandez cigars. There's a bit of sweetness on the finish.

About 2" in...the sweetness is now present in the draw and remains throughout the draw, nose exhale, and finish. But the main flavors of wood and unique spice are still the same. I am really enjoying this cigar. It's honestly one of the best NCs I've smoked in a while. Slow, even burn at this point. Strong, white ash.

Around halfway...dominant flavors are the same. The 'strength' has dropped a solid notch, making this a cigar that I can take really big puffs from. The burn has become a little crooked, requiring a small correction.

A little past halfway...steady as she goes, Cap'n. Flavors are the same. One more small burn correction.

Toward the end...this cigar is getting more smooth rather than stronger/more harsh, which tells me that the tobaccos used were properly aged/fermented. That can be rare these days. Those with sensitive palates will understand what I'm saying. Dominant flavors are the same. I could have stabbed and nubbed this cigar, but I let it die at around 1".

Final thoughts...I'm glad that I get notifications from Cigar Page. I would absolutely snag another box of these.

Never heard of this one, Mark, but by your review, maybe I should have.
