Why's temperatures important for cigars?

I know that temperatures have an affect on the humidity in the air (temps come down, RH goes up), but assuming that you can keep the humidity correct regardless of the temperature why is it important to keep the temperature correct to the ideal of 70 degrees?

What affects do temperatures have on cigars?

The main reason I ask is because I've thought about putting a humi in a room where the temps are only about 55 degres usually.

A temperature of 64-70°F (18-21°C) is considered ideal. At lower temperatures, below 54°F (12°C), the desired aging process of the cigars is impaired. Therefore, cold wine cellars are only suitable for cigar storage to a limited extent. Even worse are high temperatures. Temperatures of over 75°F (24°C) can lead to worm infestation and cigar rotting. For this reason, the humidor should not be exposed to direct sunlight.

I had the same question some time ago, about lower than 70 temps. There's really no problem with that. The concern is having temps over 75 for a day or more. The dreaded beetles can hatch and ruin your cigars.
The one thing I am almost 99% certain, but no one has confirmed this to me, is that the lower temps will slow down the aging process. So, I believe, that it will take longer for your smokes to get to the same point in it's flavor profile at a lower temp.
But then again, I'm fairly new to this.

100% correct. I know some collectors who deliberately store their cigars at lower temperatures for this very reason, slower muturation, just like wine. The cigars will taste and be where they need to be but it will take much longer. At temps under 50F consistent it will take possibly 3 years of age to get what you could achieve in 4-6 months at 70F. I wouldnt worry about this in the slightest personally, its for people who have alot of time to perfect their hobby to the next level.

Id imagine the changes would be very subtle but a perfected palette would be able to tell them apart.
