Need input on trip to KC Missouri
Me and the mrs. are going to be going to KC Missouri in the beginning of July for our anniversary. We are thinking of getting there a little bit after noon on a Friday and will stay till Monday morning likely.
I am wanting some input on what to do, where to eat, what to go see while we are there. this is what we had in mind so far. friday, maybe grab some lunch when we get there......nothing fancy. friday night, go watch the royals play some ball. May or may not go out to eat somewhere afterwords. Saturday, we will likely go to oceans/worlds of fun for a lot of the day. I'd like to go tour the boulevard brewing company afterwords. go eat somewhere nice Saturday night, maybe sushi or BBQ if someone can tell me a good place to go. nothing planned for Sunday I guess.... I also found out that one of the hotels we are staying in is right by Outlaw Cigar so we will be going there sometime during the trip as well. anyone have any suggestions? |

Re: Need input on trip to KC Missouri
Me and my wife love going to KC. Here are some suggestions, Em Chamas for supper. It's only a couple hundred yards from Outlaw. It's a brazilian BBQ and very good. Grinders KC is amazing. It's downtown. The Plaza has a ton of great places to eat. So does the Power and Light District. On the way to KC, stop by Weston, Mo and go to Weston Tobacco. Corey the owner is a great guy and makes some great cigars. It's a cool little town also with alot of history. Hope this helps some.

If you go to the Plaza, stop by Diebel's. I like Outlaw, but the selection and depth of knowledge at Diebels blows them out of the water. Best in the country, as far as I'm concerned. (Xikar is a KC company, and all of their online orders are fulfilled through Diebel's.)
As for BBQ, avoid Gates. Top three places to hit: Arthur Bryant's (original at 18th and Brooklyn), Oklahoma Joe's (original at Mission and 47th), and Fiorella's Jack Stack (recommend crossroad's location, near Union Station). Boulevard has an excellent tour, but be sure to make arrangements in advance. The tickets are hard to get! When you're by the brewery, check out some of the Mexican food along Southwest Boulevard. |

Re: Need input on trip to KC Missouri
I concur about OK Joes and Jack Stack for BBQ and Grinders for something different. The couple times I've been to Bryant's, I wasn't impressed. But it's worth trying if you've never been there. Just a note about most of the more popular BBQ places, expect a wait of upwards of an hour to get in. It's worth it though. If you go to Joe's, try the smoked chicken gumbo, along with the seasoned fries and all of their BBQ'ed meats.
Stroud's is another popular place, if you like fried chicken and stick to your ribs side dishes. As mentioned too, the Power and Light District is a great place to go hang out at. I've yet to make it to Outlaw's south location, but I hear it's HUGE (used to be a Macaroni Grill).

Sounds like a lot of folks have given you very solid suggestions.
You might consider checking out the liberty memorial, which gives you an awesome view of the city. Also, Union Station is another neat place to visit. All the other food suggestions have been solid. If you want something a little more divey, or something different from KC bbq, let me know. I like to pat myself on the back with how well I know KC's food scene.

Re: Need input on trip to KC Missouri
Mexican food around/south of the boulevard. I can at least get you started.
If you want a place more "upscale" that's on the boulevard, I would suggest El Patron. Very very tasty food there. Best Mole I've had. If you want something "authentic" (street tacos), I would go south of the boulevard (just off n. 7th st trafficway) in kansas city ks. The name of the place I suggest is El pollo rey. They only do chicken. The chicken is done over a wood fire, so it's lightly smoked and very good. They give you spanish rice, beans, tortillas, and pickled onions with the meal to build your own tacos. Delicious.

Re: Need input on trip to KC Missouri
Go to Jack Stack BBQ on 22nd. Get the burnt ends and brisket combo.
Then go to Arthur Bryants the next night and have the same. Tell us which one you liked better. And enjoy some of the best BBQ you will find anywhere.

My work gives out discounted tickets. Or at least they used to. Try groupon.

Re: Need input on trip to KC Missouri
In the past HY-Vee and other grocery stores have offered discounted tickets if purchased ahead at the stores.
Pepsi and Coke cans sold locally will offer $5 off at times. I will look and see if we have anything listed in the local coupon books from the schools that have things like that often. |
