Default JdN MUWAT Bait Fish

Another live review... This time the Joya de Nicaragua / Subculture MUAWT Bait Fish.

These cigars came in about a week ago, and I tried to smoke one ROTT, and the moment I lit it, I knew I screwed up. Bitter, muted, bad burn, all the characteristics of being too moist.

But it still showed promise. So after leaving one out on the counter for a week, I'm back to bug you again.

It's nice. Started off a bit rough, kind of a charcoal, but that was probably due to my uber-scientific humidity reduction method (patent pending).

Woodsy, cinnamon, a bit of coffee notes. Not getting that hint of "classic JdN flavors" that I get out of the regular 60RG MUWAT. A bit of a tingle through a nose exhale from the pepper.

More in a bit...

The body is picking up a bit. Heading now more towards the lighter end of full.

Flavors are similar but getting a hint of sweetness that I would associate with some of the Jalapa grown tobaccos that JdN typically uses.

Getting down to the end, overall, a very nice little cigar from JdN. Not very dynamic, but yet I'm finding myself burning my fingers trying to get more out of the nub before tossing it.

It's no Punk but it's a good cigar I'd pick up again.

Great review Adam

I too enjoy the haphazard dryboxing method.

Same here. My goal was to wait until next time I went fly fishing but don't know if that will happen.

Yeah, mine got here, proved to be too good. Out of a bundle of 25, I gave away 3 and smoked 20...sitting on the last two for no good reason now.

Thanks for the review; been really into the new Drew Estate cigars.
Can't wait to try this one.

Sorry to revive an old post but what is ROTT? Also what is the dehumidification technique? Dry Boxing was mentioned as well? Thanks for your help, just trying to learn some new lingo and tricks.

ROTT=Right Off The Truck

Dry boxing is done with a cigar that has a tight draw or is a bit squishy(wet). Just put it in an empty box for a day or two before smoking. This does not work in a high humidity climate.

Thanks man, I appreciate it! I wouldn't have thought it would take a day or two to dehumidify... Why not just leave it out for a little while?

You can also leave it out but some climate can dry it out to much.

I smoked a bait fish but thought the full size MUWAT had way better flavors.
It's a shame because I love the size of the Bait Fish. I have only smoked one of each, so it may not be fair to judge based on that, but I would not buy another Bait Fish.
Thanks for the review Adam!

I feel that the MUWAT flavors are more balanced.

To me, the Bait Fish is one of those cigars that is a bit out of balance, kind of like the LP Dirty Rat, LFD Icepick, Camacho Corojo Machitos, J. Fuego Sangre del Toro Originals - all are good cigars, but all, to varying degrees, have some powerful in-your-face flavors that really dominate over the other flavors in the cigar. They all make it work and even use it as something that sets them apart, but they all have reduced their mass appeal by doing it.
