Any sushi fans?
I've been on a big kick lately, having eaten sushi in restaurants literally 5 times in less than 2 weeks. I most often hit up a chinese buffet of sorts that also has sushi and my first plate is nothing but sushi, so I easily get my $12 worth there.
Anyway, I finally gathered all the ingredients earlier in the week and made my first 2 rolls today. First was just tuna, in the 2nd I added avocado, and the 3rd was spicy tuna. Making the wasabi made my eyes almost water a bit. I wish the sauce for the spicy tuna turned out a bit hotter, but otherwise, I was quite pleased with my initial attempt. |

Re: Any sushi fans?
I've LOVED sushi ever since I tried it in High School. A couple years ago, I finally convinced my fiance to try it, and she fell in love too. We go out for sushi at least once a week, and have even been known to have sushi for lunch and dinner in the same day. The sushi around here is top notch, so we never have an issue finding a place to eat. We don't often make it at home, because tuna is pretty expensive, and its hard to find a really good, fresh piece at the store around here.

Re: Any sushi fans?
I LOVE sushi. You have to make sure the place you eat is serving good stuff though. I know people who spend a lot of money for really poor quality fish.

I can't get into Sushi. Which may be a good thing as it isn't as cheap as me.

Sushi is my favorite food.
Although I stay away from rolls, I stick to ordering Chirashi bowls then asking the chef for whats good and have him serve it nigiri style. My favorites as of today, they change like cigars.. aji - japan bluefin baby barracuda sardine sweet prawn with fried heads washu beef |

" Any sushi fans?"
Yep, and like you, I also roll my own. Always get all kinds of crazy looks from the fish mongers when I'm buying all these tiny portions of their high grade fishes until they figure it out what I'm doing (usually takes about three different fishes for them to catch on). Although, honestly I prefer sashimi, but there are a few ingredients and combinations you can't do that with and you have to have sushi. |

Re: Any sushi fans?
sushi and sashimi here.. there's a place by me that is great (Japanese embassy people go there) which has toro (fatty tuna), mirugai (giant clam), uni (sea urchin), and ama ebi (raw sweet shrimp).
They used to have an all you can eat twice a year with tickets in advance for 40 bucks. Basically they'd set up a buffet line and then all the sushi chefs would be working the bars and you could have 6 pieces of nigiri at a time.. Every time I went up it was a combo of the 4 above.. I think by the end of the 2 hours, my friend and I ate about $300 worth.. each |

I'm a little late replying to this, but I work in Pleasant Hill. I'm gonna have to give this place a try...
If any of you are into sashimi, I highly recommend trying Toro. It's a little pricey in most places, but worth every penny. Toro is the "filet mignon" of tuna, it literally melts in your mouth. |

First pic yes, second pic half is (the nigiri is).. the hamachi kama while the absolute bomb isn't sushi, and the chirashi bowl is tossed sashimi with some seasoning and usually roe.

I'd say we make it a sushi then herf, but Mr. Winston is very particular on his eats and I fear this is something that's beyond his pallate unless you replaced the nori with the ligero of a diplomatic cohiba
