Default Cigar Review: The Cain by Nub Cigars

Cigar: Cain Habano Ligero
Wrapper: Ligero Habano
Binder: Ligero Nicaraguan
Filler: Ligero Nicaraguan
Origin: Nicaragua
Price: Nothing official yet but from what I hear $6-$9 per single

Initial Thoughts: This cigar was generously given to me by Sam Leccia of Nub Cigars. This cigar is being officially release at IPCPR 2009 this weekend. At realse there will be two wrappers, a Maduro and Habano. I received just one cigar to review, which is usually not my style, but we are going to review it for you any way. This cigar is straight Ligero tobacco, which is the top priming of the tobacco plant but is triple ferment which should scale down the strength a bit and release the maximum amount of flavor from the tobacco. Fermentation is when they bring the temperatures up on the tobacco and leafs which can get to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Triple fermentation just means it was done three separate times. The Cain has already been hailed as a very strong cigar and I’m hoping this cigar doesn’t make me cry like a little girl. The cigar is very nice looking sporting a simple foot band. As with most of Sam’s cigars, they are expertly rolled and there are no noticeable defects.

Flavors: Initial puff is sweet and peppery. After the cigar settles down I get sweet woodsy flavors with some pepper. The sweetness has almost a faint honey which is nice. As the cigar progresses the woodsy flavors turn earthy and the sweetness backs down a bit. Overall the flavors did not flow well with one another however this cigar is pretty fresh and only had one day in the humidor.

Smoking Characteristics: The draw was great on this cigar and the ash was nice and compact however the burn on this cigar was pretty bad. Multiple touch ups but that is to be expected from a ligero cigar because of the thickness and all the natural oils of the leaf.

Final Thoughts: Unfortunately I think this cigar was smoked way too early in its life. I think even a week in the humidor would have made a drastic difference in the burn and flavor of this cigar. Overall the cigar was enjoyable but I think with a bit more time to settle in this cigar would be great. As far as the strength of this cigar, it was pretty strong. I am usually not negatively affected by nicotine in cigar but this one had my hands shaking just a bit, but no sweats, no dizziness, and no hurling into a garbage can.

Worth a Shot: Of course, but let it sit for at least a week. Mild cigar smokers stay away though!
Buy it Again: Yes, I will be after a 5er to sit on and we’ll see how it goes from there
Enjoyablility: Medium
Similar Cigars: CAO LX2, La Flor Dominicana Ligero, also had some similarities to the Nub Maduro
