Default Thinking of getting a golf GPS system.

I have always had trouble gauging yardage, so I am thinking about getting one. I am currently looking to spend less than $250 on it. The ones I am looking at are the SkyCaddie SG2.5, SkyCaddie SG 3, Sonocaddie V100, and the iGolf Caddie II. I am leaning toward the SG 2.5, but don’t like the idea of having to purchase a membership to download courses. I am not a big time traveler, and only play a couple of times a year out of state other than that I play about 5-6 different courses. If anyone has used any of them, and could give me some feedback it would be greatly appreciated. I would also like to be able to be able to go to the range, and get the average for each club I have, that way I can be more accurate. Is there a way to do that?

I've gotten pretty good at judging distance since I started playing but I would love to hear how much these things help out. I've never actually seen anyone on the course with them.

My dad uses a skycaddie. He seems to like it. The only way I see it helping out is 150 yards in.

I wish I was good enough that I needed to judge yardage. I just go "Crap, that is a long way away. Better get the 5 iron"

I usually do the "How far can i throw a football" or "how far can I throw a softball" thing...that helps me decide the yardage..other than that it's my 4 hybrid as choice of club

why not get one of these? http://www.google.com/products/catal...tle#ps-sellers

Once you get used to gauging distances on the course, I fear you will have a very cool $300 paper weight.

Or, you could get a laser range finder, and aim it at the flag itself. Plus you could use it for determining range at the shooting range, hunting, ... .

Matt

Edit: the GPS will give you distances to hazards though. That is a plus.

Check out the Golf Buddy. My brother bought one last summer and swears by it. I've used it during a couple of rounds and it's pretty cool. The nice thing about the Golf Buddy is that you don't have to pay an annual membership fee. Once you own the unit, you have access to their course database for life.

Good info here. I've only used the ones that come installed in the golf carts at resorts. I find them handy, except when they constantly display the outside temp when I'm playing in Palm Springs during the summer and it's 104* at 9:30 in the morning.

Never really thought of getting a range finder as I just use the colored lines on the course. Guess after awhile you just figure out what club goes how far.

Do they make one to judge the depth of the water hazards? That's the one I'd need.

Not all of us play in the fairway where those colored lines are located.
