Desperately need some help with a gift for a pipe smoking BOTL
Fellas:
I know nothing about pipes. I have a friend who helped me with a sale for my business and I want to buy him a thank you gift. I want to spend $100 to $200. Here's what I know: This is his pipe: It's a Stanwell Nostalgia POS II he bought in Germany. It's the only pipe he has. Heres what he smokes in it: He said it's really bold and dark flavor. Can someone please point me in a direction for a gift(s)? Another pipe? Another type of tobacco? Another pipe and tobacco combo? Do I have enough money to do that? Any help would be greatly appreciated as I want to a little something nice for him because he hooked me up at a great time. Thanks in advance! |

Check out smokingpipes.com and look through some of their pipes. They have pipes anywhere from $30 to $3000. Try and get something similar in style, and google the pipe he currently has for dimensions and weight. The best bet would be to get something similar.
All said and done you should be able to get a good quality pipe and a few good tins for under $200. As far as tobaccos, I'd recommend anything with a good dose of Perique, as that particular blend is meant to mimic Perique without actually including it. Escudo and St. James Woods come to mind as some of the richer blends he may like. As far as keeping with a straight VA with a darker flavor, Epitome and Dark Star come to mind. Something nice to grab since its a yearly Christmas release would be a tin of Christmas Cheer. All of the above, save Escudo, are McClelland blends, Epitome is one of their club blends. |

I would get him a Petersen system standard 302 since that is close to the shape of the pipe in the pic. (And I own one and its great)
For the tobacco I would go with Mcbarrens Old Dark Fired since it is flue cured as well and a bit more potent than what was pictured. |

Thanks so much fellas. Another question: What is the difference between a "p-lip" and a "fish tail"?
I was thinking about one of these two as he may like the rusticated change of pace. http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/ne...duct_id=104732 http://www.smokingpipes.com/pipes/ne...duct_id=106751 Thanks! |

Edit- Looks like the P Lip is designed to deal with tongue bite. Here is a link. http://www.peterson.ie/pipes/system.html I have a "P lip" and I don't notice more flavor from it but when I clench my pipe I get zero saliva traveling down the stem like some of my other pipes. |

Thanks everybody for your help. In addition to the tins pictured previously, here is a pic of the pipe I got him:
I dropped it off today. I'll let you know how it goes with the p-lip. |
