Renters insurance and cigars
Does anyone know if cigars are covered under renters insurance? I am with progressive and after being passed on a phone loop for 20 min I could not get a person to tell me. We are leaving Norfolk on Fri if its still a cat 2 and I'm wondering if I should bring them with me. The wife is actually worried about them as well

Re: Renters insurance and cigars
Most renters' insurance has limitations/exceptions for "collectible" items. Every insurer defines it differently, but it usually covers goods that can't be immediately purchased on the open market. If you talk to your insurer and want coverage for rare/HTF cigars, make sure you mention it explicitly.

You should have coverage up to your limit for personal property barring any exclusions or limitations on coverage. I think you would have a very good argument that they are personal property.
Now, I have thought about this before in regards to cigars that are not available on the US market and how(if) that claim should be filed. If I recall correctly, Blueface is the resident claims manager. Perhaps he'll chime in with a ruling for us.

Most policies I've had included a clause in all that tiny type limiting cash and consumables to a certain amount.

The last time I had renters insurance I read every word in the policy. When I got to the end of the policy, it said that they would not pay out on a claim that arises due to thermonuclear detonation.
