How many tries before deciding on a cigar?
I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on this: How many cigars do you think you need to smoke before deciding if you like a cigar or not?
The reason I'm asking is because sometimes I try something and kind of like it, but not feel sure. Usually, if I try that cigar again, I end up deciding I like it. So, I suppose that would mean I need at least two smokes before deciding on a cigar. Tonight I tried an Olvia V for the first time (Torpedo), and I'm in this position where I'm just not sure. Do I bother trying it again? Or just let it go, since there are plenty of other things to try? I typically like a full bodied cigar, so that wasn't the problem. I just thought the second half of the cigar was on the harsh side... but I realize a number of things could contribute to this. So... do you typically give a particular smoke one chance, and if you don't love it, you move on? Or do you give it a second, third, or more of a chance before deciding for sure? |

After smoking a stick and seem undecided...I give it another shot. 2X is my limit.

I usually give it a second chance. Many things could contribute to the overall first impression: Time of day, mood, drink, food, health, or others.....
Sometimes it just turns out it was not a good day. Other times, the cigar is just a POS, and the second time confirms it. I have also found that I may like a cigar the very first time and due to all of the above, I did not like it the second time. |

Re: How many tries before deciding on a cigar?
I try at least 3 sticks with different amounts of humidor time to see how and if the cigar will improve with time if I'm on the fence.

Re: How many tries before deciding on a cigar?
Lots of times I don't even get them lit before I decide I don't like them.
I'll try a few, usually. I force myself to try a lot of new stuff that I really don't want to. If a cigar doesn't strike me as "good" after three tries, I don't go back. If they strike me as "bad", they usually get chucked in the alley before an inch is gone. Life is too short and there's too many good cigars.

Re: How many tries before deciding on a cigar?
for me, they usually get just one shot. not saying it's the best method but that seems to be the way things normally work out. Even if I don't fall in love with a cigar right away, I'll try it again. However if I don't like the first one at all, it's not likely to get a second look.

Re: How many tries before deciding on a cigar?
I'll try 3-5 before deciding I know whether I like or dislike a stick. But for the most part I'll never right off a cigar. In the past I wrote off The Rocky Patel Decade only to smoke one blind and think it was a great smoke.

It depends on how bad try #1 was.

It depends on how bad and how expensive. If it's a complete dog rocket and pricey, I won't bother with a 2nd chance.

One and done for me, if I try it and immediately like it ill buy more and hope they are as good as the first one. If they suck I move on

Re: How many tries before deciding on a cigar?
As I am a Nub cigar fan, and I love Nubs in general, I thought for sure the Cain would be right up my alley, but I gotta be honest.. I've smoked 5-6 of them, and they are not as strong as touted, and every one of them has horribly wrapper splits about halway down the smoke once I light up. Thats enough for me to say goodbye. They taste decent, but they aren't as strong as I would have liked, and the cracking and splitting wrapper is a big pet peeve. I think I'll let others buy the cains. It pains me to say that, as I really enjoy Nubs (unlike most others here!)

Re: How many tries before deciding on a cigar?
If the first one I try is OK I will give it 2 or 3 more tries before deciding. If the first stick I try is really bad, I usually don't return to that smoke.

Re: How many tries before deciding on a cigar?
I usually decide right away on the cigars I don't like . If I'm on the fence I'll try 2 or 3 and wait a while to revisit . One cigar in particular that took me a long time to like is the Fuente Cuban Belicoso , received a box as a gift and didn't like the first few , waited a year and tried again still to no avail , 3 years later now and I really like them . I bought a box of Monte #4's that everybody and their brother here seems to love . I can't find anything about them to like . Traded 5 away and he apparently really likes them so it was not a bad box I bought . A new cigar that I was gifted in a Padilla sampler was the Padilla Habano , really liked it a lot . Bought 5 in a B & M and burned them all up in 5 days . I have since bought 2 boxes and keep watching auction sites for them . They are my current favorite cigar . Good luck in your hunt for the ultimate sublime smoke .
