Default Am I the Only Guy Who Doesn't Like a Bunch of Hops?

Honest question...I don't like a lot of hops. Pilsner Urquell is exactly my uncomfortable zone; I can't drink a bunch of that. Oskar Blues' Mama's Little Yella' Pils is about right to me, though still hoppy.

Confess, all of you.

I'm hophead, I admit, but I do think some take it too far...Stone comes to mind. Bear Republic Red Rocket Ale and North Coast Red Seal Ale are my top two favorites. Been enjoying a rare (at least over here) find of Rogue Dead Guy Ale. In other words, for me, hops=goodness.

Not a fan of high-hops beer. To me, the bitters get in the way of the other tastes, often leaving only the bitters of the hops as the only flavor noticeable. Seems all the micro's are going to double, even triple hops. Takes a lot of beers off the market for me.

I love the Dead Guy Ale, and it's been getting easier to find around me at liquor stores and in some bars.

A couple months ago I had a couple pints of cask-conditioned Bell's Two-Hearted Ale. It was awesome: smooth and hoppy all at the same time.

Bring on the hops!

A few years ago I was like that, so I definitely hear you. You should try Hoegarden, or Hitachino Nest White Ale, they're both Belgian Wits, and two of my favorite light bodied beers. Nowadays I am addicted to hopped up IPAs, some of my favorties are Stone IPA, Anderson Valley's Hop Ottin and Sierra Nevada's Torpedo Extra IPA. I think after a certain point your tongue gets used to the bitterness and it feels robbed if it isn't there. I feel the same way as you do about Hops about the uber-full bodied cigars like LFD Chisels, they just seem excessive to my palette.

I loves me some hops, but I am also one who loves a seriously malty brew. I guess it just depends on my mood.
I like a balanced hoppy brew. Now I also like Devil Dancer...but to me it is balanced. It DESTROYS your tounge, but it does it in a good way.

What would be a good example of a seriously malty brew?

Spaten Optimator, or any Dopplebock (Double Bock)
I agree with what people have said about hops needing to be balanced. As long as there are other flavors and aromas though, I dig the bitters.

Dopplebocks, most Porters... One that comes to mind right away is Spaten Optimator. Founders Dirty Bastard is also fairly malty.

It depends upon the style. I like big IPA's, but I like malt-forward styles too. To say that all microbreweries are overhopping their beers is inaccurate. Go to a website like BeerAdvocate and research the "Beer Styles" page and find some styles that sound appealing. Then see what some of the popular brands are and give them a try. If you have shops in your area that sell singles, make a mixed 6 pack and try a nice variety.

I agree that an overly hoppy beer is horrible.

I have made the comment many times that alot of the new craft brewers tend to make beers with alot of hops and it can be disgusting. They just don't get a balance and the beer is overly hoppy.

Don't get me wrong, I like hops, but I don't want my beer to taste like I stuck a handful of hops in my mouth.

Snake Hips, one other thought. The beers you mentioned are both fairly light yellow beers. There's not much going on in the malt department there. You might like to try some English beers like Newcastle or Sam Smiths Nut Brown Ale. They are more malty than hoppy.

I enjoy many types of beer but I am a hop head when the rubber meets the road. I also like a well balanced hoppy beer but I also like them as hoppy and bitter as can be made. I like my tea the same way.

if you like seriously hoppy beer, pick up a four pack of flying dog double dog double pale ale. Just finished the last of mine, and am going back for more.

I am sort of a hophead but drink what you like. I actually prefer a good pilsner often with my cigars because they don't over power them

LOVE hops, Stone ruination, greenflash IPA and three floyds dreadnaught. Definitely a hophead but I don't discriminate I love dopplebocks, stouts, and belgians just the same.

I can tolerate hops in balance with everything else... a beer with no hop flavor isn't worth drinking... (ie. Birra Moretti Doppio Malto) And a beer with no malt flavor is akin to the smell of horse piss and I can only imagine not too far off in flavor (ie. Dogfishhead 120 Minute IPA).

Many of the American MicroBrews tend to overhop their beers in my opinion. (Sierra Nevada comes to mind)

The other thing I find ruins a lot of the American MicroBrews for me is the tendency to have overly sweet beers. I assume from adding sugar during fermentation to keep the yeast happy. (This actually ruins quite a few of the high ABV Belgians for me as well... and I love Belgian Beer.)

The one thing I hate most is buying a nice expensive liter of something special from an American Micro Brew only to find an overly-sweet, unbalanced, hop syrup inside. I can't remember which of the members here has the tagline "What the matter, afraid you'll taste something?" But in this case... Yes... something awful. You can keep your Hop-syrup and pour me a nice, balanced Stella.

That why I don't like SN, they don't hop enough. To me, their stuff is bland.
