And then there was one?
Could Oregon become the 49th state to trust its citizens to pump their own gas?
https://www.koin.com/news/oregon/new...e-at-the-pump/ There are already many exceptions to the rule. Rural areas can let people fully pump their own gas and places like Pacific Pride, which is unattended, can as well. In urban areas, people can't take the handle off the pump, but can pump the gas if you insist. This is almost always done for motorcyclist and people with high end cars that don't want the attendant to possible spill gas on the paint. The part of state law that banned self-service used to begin with "In that Oregon has uniquely bad weather ...". Not a good approach for a state that depends to much on tourist dollars.

I'm with you. I've been pumping my own gas my entire life practically. I remember the days when attendants would come out but in Florida we've always had self serve pumps and now it's almost completely self serve now. I guess it's a good thing. now they don't have to tip the attendants every time they want gas especially considering the price of gas these days

Oregon has cars? Now that's pretty crazy. I thought everything besides flannel, coffee shops and fixie bicycles were just outright banned. Huh, maybe that's just Portland then... |

Re: And then there was one?
Ron, there's one in Rochester, just north of Parkdale at the next light, West side of the road. Just for when it's -10 degrees, it's a nice option.
My understanding is Jersey had this law due to union lobbying from way back. I had no idea Oregon had a similar law. Glad if it goes. Yay freedom! Like I said, it's a nice OPTION to have full service but it shouldn't be law. We let people drive 80mph down the freeway in 25,000 lb RVs with no special licenses (just normal operator's license). We can't be trusted to pump a flammable liquid into a tank?

Re: And then there was one?
I think some of the reasoning was people couldn't be trusted to pay on the honor system. I actually like the idea of bringing back full service pumps but i get the idea no one would like losing some pumps to full service lanes but who knows. I remember growing up my father hated full service lanes because he liked pumping his own gas. I don't think he trusted the attendants to pump the amount of gas he wanted. We were quite poor growing up so every penny mattered to him. I don't think he cares today now that he's making 6 figures. I just remember him telling attendants not to wash his windows because he didn't want to tip for that. God bless you all!

I was surprised at this well, it’s self serve here and has been at all the states ive been to that I can recall. There was one tiny gas station that pumped it for you right across the River in Ohio that my grandma used to go to but they closed up about 5 years ago.

Re: And then there was one?
So, New Jersey is the other state without self service. A guy from Joisey that moved here had a funny explanation for that. [Warning, this is political in a humorous way]
He told me that Jersey politicians, regardless of party, had lots of illegitimate children that were not too bright, and hard to find jobs for. So they made sure that gas station attendants would always be required there.

Re: And then there was one?
I grew up in NJ and l have lived most of my life in the state. I like full service, especially in the winter.
I have a cigar related story. FIFTEEN YEARS ago, I drove up to bumblefudge Connecticut to pick up the halfway useless and mostly senile paulmac to go to a herf with some CT and masshole botls. On the way to the casino we were all meeting up at I had to stop for gas and forgot about self service. So we are sitting there for a few seconds, Paul looks at me and goes "WHAT THE F@#K ARE YOU WAITING FOR THIS AINT JERSEY" in his typical calm demeanor.
