Default So, I thought about doing the cash for clunkers.

I have a pristine 95 Camaro bought new by me with 43k miles on it, and thought I might take advantage of the cash for clunkers program. According to the cars.gov website, my car averages 20mpg so it does not qualify. Also, it would be shame to scrap this car as required by law. Still, that 4500.00 would have been a sweet deal on a new car. Anyone taking advantage of the program??

Nope, I will not be part of the bail outs. I also will never buy a GM again.

My comment about GM was not related to the Cash for Clunckers, it was directed at their bankruptcy and now being Government owned and run. I will not support this Gov.

I would love to with my 94 4Runner but I haven't owned it a year so I don't qualify. Way to go green/economic legislation. Seriously a year? What is the point in that.

Probably so people are less likely to go out and keep buying and turning over qualifying cars with the money.

And what would be so bad about that? You would get more old cars off the road, better environmental impact. And for each turned in car you get sales tax off of three sales: buying the old car, buying the new car, and the guy that sold the old car now has cash to buy something else?

If the idea is an environmental and economing impact the 1 year restriction is stupid.

A 95 with only 43K on it? Wow! I would put that on in less than three years.
Can you get cash for a dead Toyota and buy a Ford?

If you've driven and had it registered it for the past year, yes. But, it has to have an average mpg of 18 or less per the government table.

I was thinking about it. I have a 93 Explorer that gets me around 10 MPG. I really want to get a truck but the only ones available are the small ones like the Ranger, Colorado/Canyon, the Mazada version of the ranger and the tacoma and most are only 2 wheel drive. What is nice is they offer the Colorado in a 4 wheel drive with a 5 or 6 speed manual which would be cool. Does anyone have experience with the 4 cylinder Colorado/Canyon? The thing is I really want to get a new Silverado and for a 20 year old kid I dont really want to be making payments.

I might just end up getting a used truck and selling the explorer

My dad is thinking about trading in his old (mid 90s I think) Explorer. I'm not sure how much he'll get, but said he's going to try it.

If he wants to get a car he'll get $4500. For the small trucks Im pretty sure he'll get $3500.

Hold on I'll find the link

I was most pissed about the stupid age limitations of the bill... the car or truck being traded in has to be 25 years or newer? What the crap is that? My parents have an old POS F250 they inherited from my grandparents that they would love to trade in and get rid of, but its a 1982 so they don't qualify...

I have to say I'm getting seriously tired of these damn hoops you have to jump through for this bill... A serious waste of a Billion dollars...

It then quotes a 98 Wrangler as having 18 mpg combined which does qualify. The 97 and 98 are the essentially the same vehicle AFAIK

Point is, check around.

What happens to the old cars? They have to be registered and drivable. Do they crush them or maybe ship them out of country?

My 11 year old 295 HP V-8 car gets 18.5 MPG city, 25 MPG at 75 MPH on the open road. It would not qualify. Same mileage the 125 HP Toyota got before the engine died. I'm S.O.L.

Besides, you can save far more money buying a two year old low mileage car.
