Default Pipe Storage Question.

Ok So here is an Idea that I was thinking about today. My desk and my Pipes I would like to figure out a way that I could make something where I could store my Pipes in my Desk Drawers. I have a custom built desk that has 3 drawers on the right there are 2 and on the left there is one deep drawer. I would like to be able to set my pipes in the drawers in a way that when you open it they will be laying out some how. Covered in Red Felt/Velvet. looks big enough for 2 wide and 16 long. If I was able to make it 2 deep that would be cool too. With top as a tray to remove or hinged to revel the same in a second tier.

Cool. I haven't seen it done before in 10+ years of pipe smoking, but I'm sure it has been done. It would be great if you post pics of your progress.

Btw, what was the question?

LOL I guess the question is how can I do it? I mean I have tried already using a few different items to try and make a Pipe holder but to this day can't seem to put my idea to a finish product. Guess the next item to try is soft foam. As soon as I can get something that I like to work out I will add some photos. So far it has been a fail.

Many moons ago, I don't remember where, I saw a wall rack for pipes. It had space for three rows of pipes and the back was flat to go against the wall and it hung there.

I'm wondering if you could lie something like that flat in your drawer and cover it with felt. Just an idea...

you could use some florist foam. cut it to fit the drawers and carve out the spots for the pipes, then cover it with felt or velvet

If you posted pictures of the desk and drawers in question, there maybe someone here who can give you ideas where to start. Not me though. I'm a newb in a wood shop.

OK so in the pictures here I have the first one showing with 8 pipes and I think if done right I could get 12 pipes or more in one area. Then after lifting out or with use of Hinge could have 12 more under the second picture shows pipe and height of Drawer.

Get a sheet of foam insulation, cut it to the interior dimensions of the drawer, roughly trace the outline of the pipes and start carving away inside the traces. You don't have to be too exact especially if you plan on gluing velvet around and inside the cutouts.

Very great idea. I have some laying around I will have to give it a try. The stuff I have is little thick but I think it will work great for start. If I like the look then i can get some thinner to make the finial product.

Thank you
James
