From what it says in the article, I've deduced that I'm a lot more likely to explode than my ipod.

Isolated incidents of this have popped up, most appear to be related to defective batteries.

Apple attempted to buy the silence of several cases, which has recently caused them to catch some flak in the media.

Cheap after market battery's cause this to happen.
Use only manufacturer recommend battery's.
