need homemade gumidor help please!
So I don't have much cash and just got into smoking cigars. I wanted a humidity but couldn't afford to buy a nice one so I made one. I used an airtight Tupperware box, battery operated hygrometer and tried a sponge and now am trying a gel filled tube. My problem ia I can't get the humidity level to stay between 68-72. It'd always between 77-81. I need help because I love the way it came out I just don't know what else to do do get the humidity right. I tried a smaller sponge, less damping of the along, then got rid of the along and tries the gel filled tube but still to much Social. Any ideas on how I can get this to work at the right level it what im doing wrong. Below are pics or links to pics so u can see what im working with. Please help! Thanks I. Advance.
My others pics are to large so if u think u can help I can email them to u or u can try these links: http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...2-11-14_26.jpg http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...2-10-48_75.jpg http://i1134.photobucket.com/albums/...2-11-14_26.jpg Last edited by master_splinter; 09-11-2011 at 09:47 PM. |

Re: need homemade gumidor help please!
Any sponge in an airtight container is going to raise the humidity to undesirable levels. The tupperware will require either humidity beads or a Boveda pack.

You might also want to make sure you're hygrometer is accurate, follow the instructions here: http://www.cigarasylum.com/vb/showthread.php?t=619 and try a brand new battery while you're at it

Re: need homemade gumidor help please!
There are a lots of alternatives to help you solve your problem -- search is your friend. Just search this thread for humidity problems.
In a nutshell, as others have said a sponges are not good for managing humidity (RH). You can use Boveda packets or beads (Heartfelt, or HCM) and your problems in all likelihood go away. You should also take the time to test and calibrate your hygrometer. You should also go to the New Inmate Thread and introduce yourself.

Re: need homemade gumidor help please!
Thanks guys. I got a 69 boveda pack and took everything else out except that my hygrometer and cigars and it works perfect! Stays right at 69-70 humidity. I love it. It also the same size as my dad real humidor that holds about 50 or so cigars. Give or take depending on size and he spent hundreds on his. He's pretty jealous that mine looks pretty good and works better then his and I only spent $10-$12 on everything. I love this thing. I even brought it to a local cigar shop when I bought the boveda pack to see if they thought that would bw the best thing for it as well. They dis and that sealed me on buying one after reading ur guys comments and having them agree. But they were pretty impressed with the way it looked and I got a bunch of compliments from employees and other customers. One customer actually asked if it was for sale and I laughed and told him no sorry I just made it. He was shocked I made it. I told him how to do it but he said he didn't think he would go three the trouble. I guess he's just lazy cause after buying everything it took a min to put together and 2 days of testing to. Make sure the boveda pack was working correctly. Ill add some new pics shortly.

I will say, very often employees at B&M's know MUCH less than a lot of the people here. You're in good hands here. Some day when you're ready to upgrade look into Coolidors. Cheap, easy, large amounts of storage.

Re: need homemade gumidor help please!
Most Tupperware/Rubbermaid containers seal real well. By their very nature they seal much better than the typical wooden humidors.

A "G" instead of an "H" which can happen when someone types fast. Followed by clicking hit submit without proof-reading.

I like that box. With the high humidity here I need the best seal I can get. Where did you get it? Please don't tell me I have to go to a Tupperware party!

That's the thing you keep your gum in. Keeps it at the proper humidity for perfect enjoyment.
For those looking for nice big tupperwares, I have one of these. It's nice and big and seals great. It's actually about to become overflow storage as I have a couple boxes on the way and the cooler is full. |
