Default Help with Cubans and aging

I am thinking of pulling the trigger on my first box purchase of Cubans. PSD4's most likely, or might go with Monte 4's as I love both of these. I am the least patient cigar smoker on the planet and I hate waiting for a cigar to be ready to smoke. At what age can I expect either of these cigars to be in good smoking shape? I realize many of you will say the longer I can wait the better, but that isn't going to happen. If they are 6 months old will they be terrible? A year? Please throw out some knowledge...

Hey Patrick, Both the PSD4's and Monte 4's are smoking great ROTT...no need to wait. I have 09 PSD4's and 08 Monte 4's and both are good. I honestly haven't had a bad Partagas or Monte yet in any size any year.

PSD4s are notorious for going thru a sick period. Why do PSD4s have this reputation? I don't really know. What I do know is that I have had PSD4s that were sick and you definitely wouldn't want to be smoking them.

Given your impatience and expectations, of the two you mentioned, I would choose the Monte 4s.

I've rarely had any problems with fresh Sig I's or Trini Reyes...might give those a shot.

WTG, Bao. Open Pandora's Box, why dontcha?

Now we'll have 37 posters with 60+ suggestions for their favorite fresh smoke. This will do nothing to help the OP who wanted to know which of 2 is preferred.

You know I love to open the flood gates....

Patrick...don't start a "What do I buy thread?" or I'll send my enforcer Dan!

I say forget the PSD4's and go with the Montes...

Buy a box each. When PSD4 goes through their sick period, you can still keep smoking Monte 4's. By the time D4's comes out of it's sick period, you are probably moving on other cigars anyways

I have only had one full box of PSD4's (09's) and they are good...I have had several singles of various years and didn't have a problem...with that said, I still prefer the 898, coronas, or Connaisseur series.

My first box purchase was PSD4, but I had the patience to sit on them for 6 months based on everything I'd read about them, and I never had one that tasted "sick." They are worth the wait IMO, one of my favorite cigars. They do come in a 10 count box, so if your funds are limited, you count buy a 10 or 25 count of the Monte 4 and a 10 count of the PSD4 to sit on! If you can afford it, I would just buy a 25 ct of each.

Some vendors will actually sell cigars with already +1 years of age on them, which means they should be ready to smoke as soon as you get them (depending on your tastes of course). I'd suggest contacting some of the ones you're thinking of purchasing from and asking them if they could provide you with some box codes––it's worth a shot.

I love these questions.
The best answer I can give you is:
According to who?

The maker: Made them to smoke now
Folks that love ROTT: ALL cigars are ready now. Age? What age? I don't know if I will be alive that long
Folks that don't like a sick period and it comes: Avoid the sick period but try to figure out exactly when that will be
Folks that like a few years on them: Wait a few years
Folks that like lots of years on them: Wait lots of years
Folks that like 40-50 years type vintage: Wait 40-50 years or buy them then and pay lots of money and kick yourself for not buying them now

Hope that helps.

BTW,
I call out BS to anyone that thinks Cubans get better with age.

Just wait until after 50.
High cholesterol
High blood pressure
Kidney stones

.......and that is just skimming the surface.

Plus your always plugged Carlos.

It's hard to pick not knowing what you like.
For something to smoke now I would agree on the Monte#4's over the PSD4. If you are going to put them away for 3-5 years (or more) I would lean more towards the PSD4.

I am telling you guys over and over and you just don't seem to understand.

This Cuban aging crap is so, so overrated.

This freaking week, H1N1, coupled with a kidney stone of all other things that could have happened, and then throw in putting your buddy down to sleep and this aged Cuban was a mess. In fact, I would have much preferred to be young or ROTT instead. I think I could have handled it better that way. So...............fresh is awesome at times, specially once you get old and realize being fresh is long lost story.

You can always get old. You can't always get young.

If you happen to get old and by luck "get young", well, there is a term for that..................dirty old man.
