Do you dump ash or just keep tamping? I've tried both and don't seem to notice any difference either way. What do you do?

Now I'm going to get my pipe tamper out the next time I smoke a cigar. When people look at me crazy as I tamp away my cigar ash, I'll tell 'em, "I learned it on Cigar Asylum!"

I dump it, usually twice, and sometimes, after a dump, I even get a little fresh tobacco on top (you know, those remains that were put to dry but didn't fit the pipe at first).

When it really comes down to it the pipe will tell you if you need to dump. Tamping lightly is the key, pack any amount of ash too much and you lose air flow. Which snuffs the pipe and causes relights to be futile. Given this sometimes with deep bowls a dump at the mid point is needed.

i dump out the ash about halfway as well, even in small pipes. just like cigars, i see no benefit with keeping ash in the way of what i'm trying to smoke.

I dump it halfway or if there is excess ash that is loose.

I don't dump or tamp on a regular basis...
However, if my bowl isn't smoking right, I'll tamp and relight. I only dump at the end, and never earlier.

I keep the ash at least half way, but after a while it can be detrimental to the cause and I'll dump it out for the last bit of the bowl

I'll only dump the ashes if I'm having a hard time keeping the bowl lit.

I usually tamp, then dump anything that is loose. But I attempt to tamp as little as possible unless I've got a burn issue. It's more relaxing without having to stress over the details, I figure.

I keep tamping unless I run into issues and then I dump and relight. Adding a bit of tobacco after dumping seems like a novel approach and I might just try that out on my next bowl. Or at least the next one where I have a little left after the original pack.

Typically I tamp a couple times then I'll empty the ash as it begins to affect the draw.
