Yeah, I know a lot of people feel this way.
My wife and I had a dog before we had kids. He was well behaved but the hair and constant sweeping/cleaning up after him was too much. We were in a small 1000 sq ft house with a 100 lb golden who needed a lot of attention. Our yard was tiny, whole lot was 80x40. Now we have room at our new place but it's just another kid to clean up after.
I enjoy other peoples dogs, I just dont want the committment. Cats, I dont' enjoy them at all. Just not my thing. Although my in-laws cats is hilarious....looking. It's a Persian, shaved, looks kinda like a little lion. LOL
