You should reread his statement. He was comparing the number SOLD with a population. His comparison holds, both in context and statistically. He didn't say that the number of UNIQUE PERSONS buying was 50M, just that 50M have been sold.
Don't go in to engineering, you'll get mauled at your first technical review.
