One would most certainly need an external controller to regulate the temperature. Johnson's Controls seem to be widely adopted for these purposes.
Also, an active humidity system (Cigar Oasis, Hydra, whatever) should go a long way in a compressor unit.
Not as easy of a road as a thermoelectric unit, but not impossible, either.
