you coudl use pectin to repair tears and such. you can buy it at a grocery store. although it will be a little shiny where the fix is.

That is the ultimate question though. if you take htem out of the cello it (makes me feel as if) breaths better. But it is very easy to damage them. Honce the ongiong debate!
