I've got you.
Basically it's a gathering of friends in the parking lot of a stadium either before, during or after a game. Usually there's food and beer involved. It's called a "tailgate" party because usually the tailgate of a truck serves as either seats or beer table for the party-goers. Here's a "textbook" definition:

Stage 2: the Medium party -- a grill, some food, more beers, and often a few more people
Stage 3: no-holds-barred, full on crazy HUGE party -- tents, large groups, lots of beer, sometimes a catered meal, often a big-screen TV, occasionally a live band
