The springfield armory XD line of pistols are great starter guns. You can pick up a new 9mm model for around $500. The 9mm rounds are cheaper for target practice at the range and have sufficient stopping power for home defense, your fiancee if she's on the small side will have an easier time handling a 9mm too. You can never go wrong with a glock either in my opinion.
