I know he was a three time MVP and then went on to win four consecutive MVP awards after an 8 year "break". A guy whose career best 49 HR's (up 15 from just a year before), then hit 73 without any help? Puh-lease.
I don't think hypocrisy is the issue unless you are trying to make the case of steroids being no more of a performance enhancing drug than a drug that mimicks caffeine, albeit with more severe side effects.
