I bought a punch recently and have only used it once. I think I like the tighter draw more with the punch that with a standard guillotine cutter. But I'm a noob so I don't know what I'm talking about.
I know some cigars, like the Drew Estate Java with a rectangular shape would be very difficult to get a clean cut.

Since you asked...
I use both but it depends greatly on the ring gauge of the cigar or how much smoke and flavor I derive from the brand of cigar. I prefer a cutter but I have clippers, punch, v-cutter, guillotine, and xi-car cutters and generally use the xi-car first and the punch secondarily.
You say you don't know what you're talking about but I think you know what you like and why you like it, so that is the rule that I follow too.
The most important part is you know what you enjoy.
With the Drew cigar I would use the V-cutter to put a nice notch at teh end of the cigar versus a punch, but it's all good.
Go for it and enjoy 8-{b}
