^^^^^ This. A lesson I wish I'd learned long before in my prior job.

Re: US Embassy in Cuba
Actually, the Chinese did, in 1949...what finally opened the gates was that they agreed to pay a percentage (around 50% or so?) of the value from that time.

Re: Cuba relations thawing
I recall reading (maybe in the book on the Cuesta-Ray story) that, when the Embargo came crashing down (almost) out of the blue on February 7, 1962, the American cigar industry was caught in a panic,...

Re: Cuba relations thawing
Absolutely they were, though of course they didn't have the "forbidden fruit" air about them. I remember some of my father's comments about Cuban cigars (he started smoking cigars in the years...

Re: An oldie from Mark Twain
I seem to remember a version of this that gradually converted English pronunciation into a strong German accent, ending with the ominous words "Ze drem vil finaly kom tru!".

Re: Cigar firmness question
Just cut it and take a test draw without lighting it. If it draws smooth and easy without much resistance, it should be good to go.

Re: Cigar firmness question
"That's plume!!" :rolleyes::r
Seriously, some cigars just seem to be hard no matter what. In my experience Padron Anniversary 1926s are a good example. A cut-and-draw test is a better indicator.

Re: 30's German Wolff Hamburg Figurado
Just found this. Thanks for posting it...I'd sometimes wondered what a German cigar from around WW2 would have been like (i.e. normal vs. dry-cured, source of leaf etc.).

Re: What are you reading?
A combined edition of "The Prince" and "Discourses on Livy" by Niccolo Machiavelli.
My past history lessons (high school etc.) had treated Machiavelli as an advocate of amorality, if not the devil...
