Re: New Pipe Smoker With A Question? Ask an Old Fart

I suppose a few things haven't been well covered yet.

Pipe dangling from the empennage of a B-52 in flight? (How...

Re: What did I buy??

Cleaning a used pipe can get complicated but most folks start with:

a. reaming/scraping crud out of the bowl assuming it's briar; or
b. same if it's meerschaum only REALLY carefully to avoid...

Re: What did I buy??

WDC was the William DeMuth Co. They made untold hundreds - maybe thousands - of pipe styles from briar, bakelite and meerschaum. They were around in the days of the amber pipestem - 1862 until the...

Re: another new Pipe guy checking in!

Nice selections, tobacco and pipes both. That little Pete must be a sweet flake pipe.

Wekkum.

Re: Every Time...

I liked what you said about shaking the tobak out in the lid - the crumbs fall to the bottom and the larger, longer stuff stays on top to use for the first wad of the fill.

Dude! Pimp my pack! ...

Re: Every Time...

A Nice Bent (article; adjective; noun): the one-pipe-in-12 that you can get a pipe cleaner through without being a safecracker.

Re: Every Time...

So weird. That used to happen to me all the time when I first took up a pipe and now it never (or rarely) does. It can only be one of a few things:

1. tobacco cut...

Re: Corian Pipe Tamper from Boom

Nice work.

(Be the first to make a double-ended tamper, Booms. One end standard Czecho-size and the other for small group-2 pipes with cake to the bottom.)

Re: Going to Turkey, and going to buy a few pipes

My opinions:

1. Get block, not pressed, meerschaum - it colors better. You will probably need to rely on the seller for this info.

2. The common meer is a half-bent carved with buccaneer face,...

I must be a fast roto-tater; never experienced a rancid pipe (neither do I coat my pipestems until they're soggy).

Re: New Pipe Smoker With A Question? Ask an Old Fart

I heard there are people who sell used pipes and they pee (or worse) on the stems before they ship them. Never knew why. I always clean and sterilize each pipe I buy in case... you know.

Scour...

Re: New Pipe Smoker With A Question? Ask an Old Fart

Re: New Pipe Smoker With A Question? Ask an Old Fart

Re: New Pipe Smoker With A Question? Ask an Old Fart

$4.00/ounce isn't crazy-wild-high; tins are two-ounces and they usually sell for $7-$12/ea. Bulk is usually $2.50-ounce and up, depending.

Rough finish inside the bowl? Maybe it was coated with...

Re: New Pipe Smoker With A Question? Ask an Old Fart

Me too; it has value for the price.

Reports on Old Boy knock-offs seem cover the range of crap to quality. No idea what to add to that. I got a sweet little Bentley refillable with side-flame...
