That's what a good psychologist or LCSW is supposed to do; the first step of overcoming a problem (once it's been recognized) is to confront it, painfullness be damned, and their job is to pinpoint...

My understanding is that this is a common British approach to aging. Yes, they are kept at a lower than normal humidity--but they are also kept at a lower temperature (around 55 degrees F or so).
