What the heck are the DOING!!!!!
Went up to port Huron MI today for a bi weekly smoke and low and behold we saw these crazy people riding ice flows and swimming in the water. We later found out that it was a training exercise for the Canadian Fire and Rescue Squad of Sarina. Still nuts to me and Kath
It started when I noticed orange dots out on the ice and could barely see them through the bino's http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/e...p2-7-09018.jpg Then they started getting closer http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/e...p2-7-09017.jpg they were riding on the ice flows from the Tip of Pint Edward down the mouth of the river under the bridge and swimming back to shore http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/e...p2-7-09021.jpg http://i228.photobucket.com/albums/e...p2-7-09022.jpg |

Re: What the heck are the DOING!!!!!
These guys were riding on Brash ice, to give you a size comparison the flow in the last picture is about 30 feet across and about 20 times the size of my van, 9/Th's of the flow is also under water and the whole river is moving at about 6 mph. Anyone of the flows if they hit you is enough to basically crush you. I heard on the radio that there were over 90 people involved in setting up and executing this training excerise. Lucky timing for us to catch them doing the excerise while we were going for a walk along the boardwalk on the us side having a 601 black.

Re: What the heck are the DOING!!!!!
So Chris, why couldn't you go way upstream and ride one of those puppies down yourself? I'm thinking a canoe or a zodiac ought to get you on and off. Looks like a good way to spend an afternoon to me.

Re: What the heck are the DOING!!!!!
Now if they could only teach Buckeyes how to swim...

Re: What the heck are the DOING!!!!!
Some great pics. There was a time I might have thought that to be a cool activity pardon the pun but now I know better. Yikes. The 601 Black sounds nice though. :ss

Re: What the heck are the DOING!!!!!
Thanks for the pictures. I wonder how many people call the police not knowing they are professionals performing training. Around here we get people calling the police for bridge jumpers when it is a crew doing work on the bridge. I guess the big signs on the side of the road saying "Bridge Work Overhead" is not much of a clue.
