Are La Gloria Cubana extra susceptible to mold?

This is the second time this has happened to me.

I went into a shop that sold cigars, (this happened to be a liquor store) with a large sliding glass door humidor. They had a nice selection, but I couldn't help but notice that the boxes of La Gloria Cubana cigars were moldy.

I wonder if there is something about the way these cigars are made and/or packaged that makes them more likely to mold. Both times I saw this, it was boxes of LGC Series R's. They are cabinet style boxes, and I wonder if that has something to do with it. Or maybe because they are not wrapped in cellophane?

To their credit, when I pointed it out to an employee, he said "Oh rats!" and removed them from the humidor. Then I saw him checking the rest of the stock.

So far I haven't had any problems with them.

I normally keep Series R #5 Naturals and have yet to have any problems.

Out of curiosity, were the ones you saw natural or maduro wrapped?

Both. Series R's, #4, #5, and #6, both natural and maduro.

Honestly, both places had humidity regulation systems that were constantly putting out mist. I'm surprised more smokes weren't moldy.

I always have plenty of LGC in the humi and have never had a problem. Had them loose and boxes.

I never had mold on my cigars (knock on wood), and I've had several LGC's (which are sold under the name El Credito in Europe, as Habanos has the rights to the LGC name here).

From my experience, cigars that we not in celo tend to mold faster....

We have LGC's on the shelf (at 68%)and they mold regardless. We've given up trying to keep them looking nice and moved them to an outside cabinet humidor (closer to 64%) where at least they don't mold...as much.

I don't know what it is about those cigars, but they're like sponges for moisture. I suggest keeping them nearer 60% if you can, because they'll absorb all the moisture they can and still be smokable, but you have less worry about mold.

There's a small B&M in my area that has a decent amount of cigars. I've noticed the LGC's being the only ones with mold.

A year or so ago, I received 4 boxes of moldy LGC's from JR's. Sent them back and that's the last time I ordered LGC's.

Now that you've mentioned this, I've noticed that the B&M that I typically go to usually has mold issues with the LGCs. Dunno if it's because they don't turn over more, or they're more susceptable to mold, or whatever.. but yeah, it does seem kinda wierd.
