Help me pick a rifle scope
OK, I have had this 303 British rifle for at least 40 years. It has had the same scope on it for the last 20. Well, the scope is toast.
I was 1 shot, 1 kill with it until this last season. I shot a deer, dropped it, but as I aimed at the neck, I took out both the hind legs at the knees. (so I still got my deer, but it was not an instant kill, but the gun was WAAAAY off.) After much work, it is apparent that the scope is whack! I need a new scope, but I do not know much about the new technology. I'd like something reasonably priced without having to blow the bank as I really don't have it to spend. I'd prefer something in $130-$230 range, but if I need to go above that, I'd listen to reasons why more cash would be a good investment. Thanks for the help! Peace of the Lord be with you. |
Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
I've always enjoyed the Leupold brand Todd:
http://www.leupold.com/hunting-shooting/scopes/ The "Rifleman" series near the bottom of the page may be up your alley in 2-7x or 3-9x. I use to carry a Leupold 36x on my Remington 700 .300 WinMag, but that was for long-range practice... Good luck! |
Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
I put a Leupold VX-II on my 1917 Enfield years ago. Love that scope to this day. Unfortunately it cost more than the rifle. I opted for the 50mm lens so it was quite a bit more. The standard 40 mm VX-II are reasonable if I remember correctly.
http://www.cabelas.com/product/Hunti...3Bcat104535180 Shows a 40 mm 3-9x zoom for $300. A little over your budget but compare it side by side with another option if you can. That's how I picked mine. Cabelas giant gun counter had dozens to try, plus the store is so big you can actually play with the zoom a bit. |
Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
leupold, bushnell, and Nikon are all good

Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
NRA's American Rifleman has been reviewing a scope a month. Lots of good info there.

Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
Are you sure it's not the nut behind the buttstock that's the problem?

Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
Field & Stream recently did a nice review of a bunch of scopes. Check out their website.

I've had a Sightron II for 10 years but the model it is out of production. It still works great killed a 12 pointer last Thanksgiving. |
Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
I have the 3-9x40mm Redfield scope and really like it. I think it performs great and the price point is very reasonable for what you get. http://www.redfield.com/riflescopes/

Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
Vortex makes great optics too. From the mid 100s all the way up to 5k

Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
For value, https://eabco.com/rifle-scopes-mounts.htm is hard to beat. The Hawke line has great optics and their own branded Bushnell copy 97D scope comes in at $159.

Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
Check out http://www.cameralandny.com/ once you decide they have some great deals on optics. That being said I am fan of Leupold VX-3

Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
If its in your price range I would have to agree with Justin. Vortex are hard to beat especially on larger bore rifles.

Re: Help me pick a rifle scope
I am hoping to get to Cabela's next week and check out a few things. I can see the prices and such on the internet, but being able to eyeball them, look through them would be very beneficial.
I like the suggestions, I am going to look at the Leupold, Nikon, and Vortex primarily. Usually the staff at Cabela's is knowledgeable and helpful. Unfortunately Mark, Cabela's does not carry the Rifleman scope - at least according to their web page. |
