English recommendation
Gents. I'm digging vapers and a straight virginia. But man can't live on bread alone so I'm spying some English blends. Specifically, meat pie, my mixture 965, London mixture, early morning pipe, and nightcap. I'm shying away from nightcap as I hear it's a strong Latakia.
I'm looking to start at a mild to medium Latika signature. What would be your recommendation? Tia. |
Re: English recommendation
Give Frog Morton on the Town a try. When I was smoking pretty much only VaPers and Straight VAs, it was the one latakia blend I enjoyed. On the Bayou ain't bad either if you find yourself in need of that perique kick.

GL Pease's Charing Cross is very smooth. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Re: English recommendation
BTW, man CAN live on bread alone. I know lots of people who smoke nothing but Virginias and Va/Pers.
But, to answer your question: Dunhill EMP (which you listed) GLP Chelsea Morning McC Frog Morton Are all excellent candidates that come immediately to mind. Also, you started your journey with a burley that you didn't like. I'd suggest giving a few more of those a try to branch out. Solani Aged Burley Flake is worth a tin as it's a fairly good test of "do I like burley." Also Solani Silver Flake is 50% VA, 50% burley and awfully hard not to like. Smoke what you like, like what you smoke. :tu |
Re: English recommendation
Squadron Leader would be a great choice as well.

Re: English recommendation
PS. Don't smoke latakia blends in your Virginia pipe(s). Latakia ghosts (leaves behind it's residue so that you can taste Latakia for many smokes afterwards) like there's no tomorrow. Get a separate pipe (a cob would be fine until you know how you feel) for latakia blends.

Re: English recommendation
Try some Peter Stokkebye's proper English bulk, it's mild and the price can't be beat

I've been back to the Home and Hearth Burley and it isn't bad. Saw the Solani today, but didn't know which one was the half and half. There was silver, gold, black and then something that sounded like an aromatic. B&M mgr and I didn't know which was which. Ended up with SL to give English a try. |

This seems like as good a place to start as any. http://i217.photobucket.com/albums/c...ps126cb4c4.jpg |

Re: English recommendation
SL is heavy in orientals. This isn't a bad thing, but a new smoker often has trouble distinguishing orientals from latakia (at least I did). That said, it's one awesome baccy! :tu

Re: English recommendation
Love Frog Morton and Squadron Leader I like them both a lot. Heck I smoked 6 Oz Squadron Leader faster then most other Tobaccos I have smoked. It was aged 4 years not sure what was made me keep going after it when I opened it up. I just couldn't stop lol.

How did I miss this when first posted.
Gawith & Hoggarth Mixture #12. Oh, do not be afraid of strong Latikia, it is not all that bad. |
