Project Of The Day : Thing From Hell

The kid has a social studies teacher that keeps his room full of guillotines. Really.
Yes, I know it's odd. I had the guy when I was in Middle School and he was odd then, so it's no shocker to me.
My Rebekah is a straight A student, always has been. Social Studies has always been her most hated subject. This year it's not. I've heard "Barry said this" and "Barry said that" a number of times. He's gotten through to her and she's enjoying his class and not struggling so much.

This guillotine project is extra credit of some sort. The rules as to how the extra work will affect her grade were very convoluted as relayed to me. I still don't get it.
What I did understand is that the guillotine had to work and couldn't be dangerous because kids are stupid.
So we set out to designing. We found an iteration that looked authentic and rustic and like something that would be widely used because of it's inexpensive styling. We managed to find a decent picture and exactly one dimension. "The blade drops 89 inches". From that we were able to scale the model 1 1/2" : 1'.
The only screw up is where the head goes in the stock. It's an inch or two too big (to scale) and I wasn't making it again.

This has been one of the most exasperating things I ever made. Mostly because I made mistakes constantly and didn't have the right tooling to do it correctly on the CNC. Most of it had to be made by hand and they itty bitty pieces. But it's done. Finally.

Here's the oddness in all it's glory, and it works perfectly.

Please tell me you tested it on the cap of a cigar before installing the dull/safety blade.

That is wicked!!!! Did it have to be that big? When you explained it was for a school project I just figured it would be a miniature guillotine...badass none the less.

That is awesome, Scott! :tu

You should bring that to Shack for my next Thursday night challenger, it would be quicker and kinder than the tequila. :)

I say keep it around for when she starts dating... I am just saying... You could make it work with a real blade... put a carrot in and have it slice down as a reminder to the date....

No, but it certainly crossed my mind. The blade holder on this thing isn't heavy enough to even cut a cap. Goes to the "don't hurt the precious flowers" rule I had to follow.
There's a cigar cutter guillotine out there, I've seen it before. It's pretty sick. :tu

It's under 24" tall. Some of the ones the teacher has in his room are like 4 feet tall. Some are 3 feet wide. Some probably weigh a ton. None of them look like the real deal. Most are parts and pieces. Some are all scaffold and no guillotine, others are just a chopper.
That's why we went through all the trouble to scale it and make something fully authentic. It's built with authentic period mortise and tenon construction along with wooden pins holding all that in place. That's what made it so freakin difficult. I hope the attention to detail gets noticed, my kid should point it out.

It looks much bigger than 24" this has to become one of the if not the show piece of his collection! Beautiful work. Now I have to search the web for minis that really are cigar cutters, but I'm thinking they would have to use razor blades and be spring loaded to get the PSI needed to slice a stick, a weight heavy enough would be too large for something table top sized.

Tons of them Yah I want one ...
