Lead on Mason Jars?
 

OK - Would like to keep some good tobacco's on hand, but hate them drying out...Thoughts on Mason Jars and sizes, where to buy, etc?

I know there are lots of different opinions out there, but cool family room versus cool basement?

Usually, the supermarket has Mason jars.

The gaskets are built into the lids.

All the dollar name chains around here have the jars/ seals and rings.

But for the older style jars with the wire snaps and glass lids. Only Family dollar has the rubber gaskets for them. Around here anyways.

To answer your question about reusing the rubber gaskets. You need to keep in mind that for canning. Vinegar and/or Pickling Salt and/or Lemon Juice is used for preserving. So it wouldn't hurt to play it safe and get new gaskets. Sealing lids and the rubber gaskets are very cheap. ;)

When he said "rubber diaphram" I was thinking the old style with glass lids.

But either way they are so cheap lids or gaskets. I'd buy them

No they don't sell them anymore. But you can still get the rubber gaskets for them. ;)

They have glass bail jars at Walmart. The kind with a glass lid, white rubber gasket, and a metal bail that snaps down to hold the lid. I have a bunch of them I used for storing little flavored cigars.
They keep them with the kitchen storage cannisters and cookie jars and stuff like that. They're swanky now. Women get special stickers that you can write on with chalk and doll them up. It's all the rage.

Basement will work just fine. I jarred up all my square tins since I heard that they may lose the seal more than the circle tins and keep them all in a Rubbermaid basket in my closet. IMHO a fresh jar (they come sterile) is one of the best ways to store tobacco.
