Pipe suggestion
I am looking for a decent pipe to purchase within the next few weeks.
I ran across this pipe: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Smoking-Pipe...item45ff0f1a13 All of the other pipes made by the same guy (David Jones) are about $100 more currently, so I was wondering your thoughts on this one. I really like it but know nothing about pipes, my opinion is completely cosmetic. http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Smoking-Pipe-...b,Lg~~60_3.JPG http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Smoking-Pipe-...kb(Q~~60_3.JPG http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Smoking-Pipe-...OgQ!~~60_3.JPG |
Re: Pipe suggestion
I hear ya Shane I need a good pipe but I must be too cheap and I have no idea what to look for.
My buddy gave me a Dr. Grabow Royal Duke I guess it smokes ok but have no idea what to compare it to. |

Re: Pipe suggestion
Everything I've read about them is positive.

Re: Pipe suggestion
Don't know anything about the man, but he's got his own web page, and I have heard the name before.
A good pipe is worth a couple bills. |
Re: Pipe suggestion
I got a David Jones pipe last year. I've only smoked it a handful of times but it smokes very well and looks better than the picture. I would say they are worth every penny.

Re: Pipe suggestion
I just checked out his auctions. They are going for a lot more than they were last year. It seems he's been discovered! I got mine for under $100.

Re: Pipe suggestion
Personally I prefer a good meerschaum pipe. They cost a bit more for a good one but if you treat it right you'll have a pipe that you can pass down as a heirloom. I got one from my grandfather and have since bought a few more. Sometimes you can find one for a decently low price on ebay.

Re: Pipe suggestion
FWIW it looks good. For $100 I would put the money towards a nice Italian briar. It will cost you a lot more but you know what you are getting.

Re: Pipe suggestion
Nice looking pipe. I have not smoked any of his pipes before but would be interested to hear what you think if you wind up getting it.

Re: Pipe suggestion

Re: Pipe suggestion
The red flag I see is that it is dip-stained. Look at the pictures where you can see into the bowl; same staining as on the outside. To me, this is an indication of a pipe maker who's less than an artist, but YMMV. Why buy a pipe that at best you'll want to modify by sanding the inside of the bowl? Trust me, stain doesn't taste good.
Of course, if the pipe speaks to you ignore me. :) |
Re: Pipe suggestion
Well the price is slowly climbing and I emagine it will be over priced (fro my budget) before the auction ends. I am drawn to it though, it is exactly the look I am into.
I want to find a nice English pipe that I can eventually hand down to a nephew or something. English is my heritage and it would be kinda cool to follow that! Interesting fact: My mom immigrated to the US on the Queen Mary! Thanks for all of your input it has helped a lot! |
Re: Pipe suggestion
I was wondering about the stain inside the bowl too. You look at www.smokingpipes.com? They have lots of pipes for < $100? I've been eyeballing some petersons for a while. I really like my corn cobs too.

Re: Pipe suggestion
for right around a hundred dollars you can't go wrong with a Peterson, Stanwell or Savinelli. They are Irish, Danish, and Italien companies respectively. If you can swing a little more check out pipes2smoke.com and look at ferndowns. Better quality and great smokers.
