Photoshop type program needed....suggestions?

Anyone know of an easy to use photo editor program? Looking for something along the photoshop lines, but preferably free.
I don't need it to do much more than cropping, but need free hand or magic wand type cropping tools. Can't live with rectangular cropping.

Working with regular old jpegs.
Suggestions?

I use photoscape or picasa and get what I need from them. I would check them out. I by no means am a pro though so some folks will likely have much better suggestions.

I second that. If you can't afford PS go with GIMP. PS is overpriced IMHO without the student discount.

GIMP or Paint.net are going to be the best choices. They both have extensive communities that use them and provide brushes, templates, etc.

Strictly speaking every crop is a rectangular crop, or a square. I am guessing what you mean is what Photoshop calls
SELECTION in which you cut things out using a tool that can create any shape. I have not tried GIMP, since I have
been using Photoshop for work for 20+ years, so I would never use anything else. But if it's free you are looking for,
this GIMP might be the best choice if it's that big.

+5 for GIMP. Note that none of these applications are "easy to use" -- you have to invest a little time in learning them. Whatever you pick, you should plan to stick with it...

OK, I downloaded and installed GIMP and played with it real quick. I think it'll do all I need to.
Thanks! :tu

They also make a light version of Photoshop called Photoshop Elements but it is still $50-$100 depending on where you get it. I actually might have my old copy laying around somewhere. I will check and see.

PS is not overpriced if you use all of its features.
That being said, for what he wants to do Photoshop is overpriced.

Sorry, that is what I mean. If you are not a professional and just looking at doing basic functions then PS is a little over priced unless you can afford it. I find great value in PS and it is worth every penny I paid. I used it a ton at school when I was a graphic design major but I have since switched majors.

The nice thing about the GIMP (and Irfanview as well) is there are tons of tutorials online if you want to learn some of the more advanced features.
